Expelled by the Grandfather, Researched by the Grandson? Alternative civil Service in New York

At the heart of this impressive exhibition are the encounters between the Austrian-Jewish immigrants in New York and the young Austrians carrying out oral history interviews with exiles and survivors as part of alternative civil service (an alternative to compulsive military service in Austria).

The exhibition was organised by the Jewish Museum Vienna, the Leo Baeck Institute New York, the National Fund of the Republic of Austria and the Verein GEDENKDIENST and was exhibited simultaneously in Vienna and New York in 2002.

The exhibition focused not only on the life stories of Jewish former Austrians, their lives in New York and their relationship to Austria, but also the motives of the young Austrian men who met with them and who had fled their shared homeland.

We are pleased to be able to make the long out-of-print exhibition catalogue available online here.
